On August 2, 2007 the US Senate declared September National Bourbon Heritage Month. And this September there were plenty of places to learn about and taste what is considered America’s “Native Spirit.”
Wrapping up its month long celebration, Bourbon takes its name from Bourbon County, Kentucky and must be aged in new American oak barrels. It is the most regulated spirit production process in the world; begin composed of at least 51% corn with water, grain and yeast being the only other ingredients. In addition, Bourbon must start its aging process at no more than 125 proof and finish between 80 and 160 proof.
Bourbon is considered the quintessential America spirit and deserves to be recognized. Take Brother Jimmy’s for example: With multiple locations in New York, Miami, San Juan and St. Maarten their barnyard BBQ theme goes hand and hand with Bourbon. The restaurant carries nearly 20 Bourbons ranging from the classics to boutique brands.
Strata Restaurant & Bar in Houston, Texas also took advantage of the celebration by offering a Burgers, Beers & Bourbon promotional menu this month to honor the spirit and to help them decided what new burger would make an appearance on their fall menu.
September isn’t over yet, so take this weekend to promote a great American spirit!
