Rejoice, lovers of thin crust, thick crust, stuffed crust, wheat crust and the undisputed king, Chicago deep dish [editor's note: the author is biased]! Rejoice, fans of hand-tossed and frozen alike! It's National Cheese Pizza Day and we don't know about you but we're planning on eating pizza for breakfast, brunch, lunch, a snack, dinner, supper a midnight snack and tomorrow as a cold breakfast delight. After all, the only way to properly celebrate what we all know should be a federal holiday complete with a parade and fireworks is with indulging in so much cheese pizza that we suffer from a pizza hangover the next day.
It is believed by many that we have the ancient Greeks to thank for pizza: they may well have been the first to cover bread with oils, herbs and cheese. The Romans would top a sheet of dough with cheese and honey and then flavor it with bay leaves. Pizza as we know it had its start in Italy where it began as Neapolitan flatbread. And for the purists out there, pizza was only made with mozzarella cheese, the main variant being the highest quality buffalo mozzarella, produced in the surroundings of Naples. What a legacy we're honoring today, and what a great way to celebrate cheese pizza. Either find a bar, restaurant or takeout or delivery pizza joint that offers buffalo mozzarella cheese and order a plain cheese pizza with it and truly honor the [possible] origins of this beloved culinary gift from the gods.
The opportunity for successful promotions during National Cheese Pizza Day are essentially endless. Discounts on cheese pizzas are, of course, the most obvious. Restaurants and bars can also offer up free small cheese pizzas or cheese flatbreads with the purchase of beer or other alcohol beverages and/or other food items. Using Hearthstone Kitchen & Cellar inside the Red Rock Casino Resort & Spa in Las Vegas as an example, all-you-can-eat promotions can be one of the best ways to attract guests to your business. Hearthstone is running a $16 all-you-can-eat promotion on their D.O.C. flatbreads. And speaking of all-you-can-eat, should you have the space available, a pizza eating competition can do wonders for the right type of venue.
The best way to celebrate National Cheese Pizza Day is with friends, family and a delicious cheese pizza pie at your favorite bar or restaurant. And leftovers. Oh, the leftovers... September 6th should be National Cold Pizza Day if you ask us.
Cheers!
