Paul Lohmeyer, a beer industry pioneer who was the first president of All Brand Importers, died late last month following a fall sustained at his home in Maryland.
Lohmeyer began his brewing career in 1950 when he joined Iron City Brewing Company in Pittsburgh. He joined All Brand Importers in 1971 and over the next 17 years introduced America to many iconic imports including Foster’s Lager, Moosehead Lager, Pilsner Urquell, Dos Equis, and others. He retired as Chairman of All Brand in 1988.
Moosehead Breweries executive chairman Derek Oland recently recalled Lohmeyer’s critical role in Moosehead’s early U.S. success. “He was a marketing guy almost before there was marketing,” said Oland.
Lohmeyer is also remembered as a patron of the arts, a gifted artist, a voracious reader and a world traveler. He was a member of the 1941 University of Pittsburgh basketball team that made it to the NCAA Final Four – the last time the UofP team achieved that feat. He is survived by his wife Martha, his three children and four grandchildren.
