November Jobs Report Shows Gains for Bars & Restaurants

Employment trended up in leisure and hospitality in November, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' November jobs report. Overall, the U.S. economy added 227,000 jobs in November, and the unemployment rate remained relatively unchanged at 4.2 percent.

Employment was up 53,000 in the leisure and hospitality sector, following little change in October (+2,000). Accommodation and food services had the biggest gains in the sector, with food services and drinking places netting 29,000 jobs. 

Leisure and hospitality has added an average of 21,000 jobs per month over the prior 12 months. The industry saw a huge gain in September, with employment in food services and drinking places rising by 69,000.
